The Label Moment

November 1st, 2011

A customer looks at your product and a competitor’s next to each other on the store shelf, and chooses one. Why?

That label moment is where 70% of purchasing decisions get made. Procter & Gamble calls this the “First Moment of Truth”—the (on average) 3–7 seconds after a shopper first sees a product on a shelf. Those few seconds are where marketers have the best chance of converting a shopper into a buyer.

There are a number of ways to appeal to the buyer: through senses, values or emotions. At Lofton Label we think your product label and packaging design can go a long way toward winning that moment. In those 3–7 seconds your packaging needs to arrest the shopper’s attention—not a big hitch, just enough to interrupt the shopping experience. During that moment, your product label should answer three basic questions:

Who am I? – This is where brand strategy is critical; the product label/packaging should be clearly identified with your brand.

What am I? – The consumer should know immediately what the product is and does.

Why am I right for you? – Show the consumer how your product provides real value.

If the shopper has to think too much, they simply move on.
